What Is Root Canal Treatment?

An End to the Infection Reaching the Tooth's Nerve

Root canal treatment (endodontic treatment) is applied when the pulp tissue (the nerves and vessels) inside the tooth becomes inflamed or damaged. This tissue is removed, the canals are carefully cleaned and disinfected, and sealed with a special filling material. Your tooth is saved without extraction and keeps its function.

Modern root canal treatment is not the same as the "dreaded" procedure you may have heard about. At Kadıgil we use rotary NiTi instruments, a digital apex locator and, where needed, a dental microscope. The treatment is painless under local anaesthesia and completed in a single session in most cases. The success rate is over 95%.

  • Severe, ongoing toothache or prolonged hot/cold sensitivity
  • Deep decay that has reached the nerve
  • Swelling, discharge or an abscess on the gum
  • A darkened tooth (nerve death) or pain after trauma

How Is Root Canal Treatment Performed?

Painless, precise and fast endodontic treatment with modern rotary technology.

1

Exam & X-Ray

The tooth is assessed with a clinical examination and digital X-ray. The number of canals, their anatomy and the infection level are determined.

Step 1
2

Anaesthesia & Access

The area is numbed with local anaesthesia. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to reach the pulp chamber. You feel no pain.

Step 2
3

Canal Cleaning

The canals are precisely cleaned and disinfected with rotary NiTi instruments. The apex locator provides millimetric precision.

Step 3
4

Filling & Sealing

The cleaned canals are hermetically filled with biocompatible material. The top of the tooth is sealed with a permanent filling or crown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Root Canal Treatment

The questions asked most often before treatment.

No. The perception that "root canal treatment is painful" is an old myth. With modern local anaesthesia you feel no pain during the procedure. On the contrary, the severe pain you had before treatment ends with it. Most patients leave the clinic saying "I wish I'd done it sooner."

In most cases root canal treatment is completed in a single session (30–60 minutes). In cases with severe infection, an abscess or complex canal anatomy, 2 sessions may be needed. Afterwards, the tooth's permanent filling or crown is placed (one more session).

After a successful root canal treatment, the tooth can last a lifetime with proper care and a top restoration (a permanent filling or crown). The key is restoring the tooth appropriately afterwards. Because root-canal-treated teeth are more prone to fracture, they are usually strengthened with a crown.

Mild sensitivity for 1–2 days afterwards is natural. Avoid hard foods in the first week. Root canal treatment only saves the tooth; for it to last, the top restoration (filling or crown) should be completed soon. Otherwise the tooth may fracture or the infection may recur.

In rare cases, re-infection or pain can develop after treatment. This doesn't mean the treatment failed; it usually stems from a new secondary canal, incomplete cleaning or restoration problems. In such cases the issue can be resolved with re-treatment (retreatment) or apical surgery.

No. No artificial solution (including an implant) can fully replace your natural tooth. With root canal treatment your tooth is saved without extraction and keeps its function. Placing an implant after extraction increases the treatment cost and takes longer. Extraction should only be considered as a last resort for teeth that cannot be treated.

For back teeth (molars), a crown is strongly recommended after root canal treatment, because these teeth bear high chewing forces and root-canal-treated teeth are more brittle. For front teeth, if the damage isn't large, a composite filling may be enough. The decision is made based on the tooth's condition.

The price of root canal treatment varies by the tooth's location (front/back) and the number of canals. Front teeth usually have 1 canal, back teeth 3–4, which affects the time and cost. A tailored quote is provided after examination and X-ray. The top restoration (filling/crown) is calculated separately.
