An Economical and Durable Classic Crown Solution
A metal substructure with a porcelain layer fired over it. A reliable, durable and economical restoration option used for many years. Ideal especially for back teeth and budget-friendly crown needs — with a 3-year written guarantee.
A Classic and Proven Solution
A porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crown is a restorative method produced by firing a porcelain layer over a metal substructure. The substructure is usually made of a nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) alloy or, as a superior option, chrome-cobalt (Cr-Co). This crown is a proven and reliable technique used in dentistry for many years.
Its main advantages are being economical and having a durable structure. It is preferred especially for back teeth and patients seeking a budget-friendly crown. However, because the metal substructure prevents the tooth from transmitting light naturally, it does not give as aesthetic a result as zirconium or all-ceramic. For patients with aesthetic concerns on front teeth, a zirconium crown is recommended.
- Those seeking a durable crown on back teeth
- Those wanting an economical restoration solution
- Those having a bridge made for wide gaps; bruxism patients
- Teeth needing a crown due to decay or fracture (no metal, incl. nickel, allergy)
How Is a Porcelain Fused to Metal Crown Made?
The crown process step by step, from examination to delivery.
Exam & Planning
The tooth's condition is assessed. Your suitability for a PFM crown is determined, the shade is chosen and a plan is made.
Session 1Tooth Prep & Impression
Under local anaesthesia the tooth is prepared for the crown. A precise impression is taken and sent to the lab. A temporary crown is fitted.
Session 1Lab Production
The metal substructure is cast from the impression and porcelain is fired over it layer by layer. A final result matching your tooth shade is achieved.
3–5 DaysBonding
The finished crown is tried on the tooth and fit and aesthetics are checked. After approval it is fixed with permanent cement. The 3-year guarantee begins.

Common Questions About PFM Crowns
The questions asked most often before treatment.
In a PFM crown the substructure is a metal alloy, while in zirconium it is white zirconium-oxide ceramic. Zirconium transmits light similarly to a natural tooth, giving a more aesthetic result. With a PFM crown, if the gum recedes over time, a metal line may appear at the edge. Zirconium is more aesthetic but more expensive; PFM is more economical and still a good option for back teeth.
It is technically suitable but not recommended for those with aesthetic concerns. Because the metal substructure doesn't transmit light, it doesn't look as vivid as natural teeth. If smile aesthetics matter on front teeth, a zirconium or all-ceramic crown is a better choice. If budget is important, a PFM crown is also an acceptable option for front teeth.
For patients with a nickel allergy, the standard Ni-Cr alloy substructure is not recommended. In that case, nickel-free chrome-cobalt (Cr-Co) alloys can be preferred. As a safer option, metal-free zirconium or all-ceramic crowns can also be recommended. You should always mention any allergy at your examination.
With proper care, regular brushing and an annual check-up, PFM crowns can last 10–15 years or more. Their lifespan depends on oral hygiene, any teeth-grinding habit and chewing forces.
If the gum recedes over the years, the junction line of the metal substructure with the tooth can become visible at the gum edge and a grey line can form. Quality work and good oral hygiene reduce this risk, but it cannot be completely prevented. If this is an aesthetic concern, zirconium should be preferred.
In bridges over wide gaps, the high mechanical strength of the metal substructure is an advantage. Especially in long bridges of 4 or more units, PFM is ideal for durability. Zirconium can now also be used for this purpose; the choice is made based on budget and aesthetic preference.
A PFM crown is completed in two sessions. In the first session the tooth is prepared and an impression taken (1–1.5 hours), then the crown is produced in the lab within 3–5 days. In the second session the try-in and permanent bonding are done (30–60 minutes). For international patients, a 5–7 day visit to Antalya is enough.
The price of a PFM crown varies by the number of teeth to be crowned and the substructure choice (Ni-Cr / Cr-Co). It is much more economical than zirconium and all-ceramic. A tailored written quote is provided after examination. There are no hidden fees.
