Standard zirconium has a zirconium-oxide substructure with a porcelain layer fired on top. Monolithic zirconium is milled from a single solid block with no porcelain layer. This makes it far stronger, removes the risk of porcelain chipping, and gives it a higher MPa strength value. Standard/layered zirconium is slightly more translucent and aesthetic, while monolithic wins on pure durability.
It can be used on front teeth, but because it is more opaque than layered or multi-layered zirconium, its translucency is slightly lower. For maximum front-tooth aesthetics, multi-layered zirconium or an all-ceramic (E.max) crown may be preferred. Monolithic is the top choice where strength matters most — back teeth, bridges and bruxism cases.
Bruxism applies very high, repeated forces that can chip the porcelain on ordinary crowns.
